LA-area state Sen. Tony Mendoza resigns before facing expulsion vote

Los Angeles Daily News quoted Sherry Bebitch Jeffe of the USC Price School on why state Sen. Tony Mendoza’s decision to resign might be better for his political future.

Mendoza’s term was set to end in 2018, and he plans to run for election this year as planned, spokesman Robert Alaniz said. One political observer said his voluntary departure, though made under pressure, could be easier for some voters to stomach than a forced removal.

“It allows him to regroup with less baggage — still baggage — but less baggage than if he had been expelled from the Senate,” said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a veteran political analyst at the University of Southern California.
