American Ideology

Governance Salon featuring Morgan Marietta, University of Georgia

At the request of our speaker, this event was not filmed.

Invoked frequently but understood rarely, ideology is one of the core concepts in American politics. Most political elites hold a clear ideology, but most citizens do not; the majority of elites understand their own ideology, but not the opposing one. These conditions create well-known disconnects between masses and elites, as well as between elites on each side. American Ideology discusses the origins of these miscommunications and the foundations of each worldview. This talk will focus on the competing perceptions of reality that shape conservative and liberal issue positions and mutual misunderstandings, employing examples such as the current debate on the national debt.
