Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Published by Aubrey Hicks on

Featuring Raphael Bostic, Colin Marshall, Donnajean Ward, and Aubrey Hicks In this edition of the Bedrosian Book Club Podcast, we’re looking at the scifi classic, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick. One of Dick’s more accessible novels, DADES follows bounty hunter Rick Deckard on a mission to find and destroy 6 state of the art, but rogue, androids. The novel is the source material for the film Blade Runner. Written in 1968, DADES is set in a near-future San Francisco amid vast desertion to off-world colonies. Those remaining on Earth contend with nuclear fallout dust and other dangers. Dick asks fundamental questions in the novel and our discussion touches on just a few of these. Follow us on Twitter! Tune in next time for a discussion of The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. This groundbreaking book chronicles how the War on Drugs policies targeted black men and ultimately turned the US criminal justice system into a system to control communities of color. In his introduction, Cornel West says “Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow is the secular bible for a new social movement in early twenty-first-century America.” Joining us for this discussion will be the Honorable Jan Perry, USC Law Professor Jody Armour, USC Price Ph.D. student Danielle Williams, and USC Price professor David Sloane. This episode will air on July 27th, read along with us and share your thoughts on Facebook. Email Aubrey if you are interested in joining the Facebook group.
