The USC Price School of Public Policy and the Bedrosian Center on Governance are honored to have California State Controller Betty Yee as this month’s Lunch with a Leader special guest. Controller Yee served two terms on the California Board of Equalization before being elected Controller in November 2014. She was overwhelmingly re-elected for a second term in 2018.

Controller Yee has dedicated her life to public service with over 35 years of experience in the fiscal policy field. She has worked with the California State Legislature in conducting fiscal based analyses of laws and has developed the Governor’s budget as the Chief Deputy Director for Budget in the California Department of Finance.

As the State Controller of California Betty Yee is the chief fiscal officer of California’s economy, the fifth largest in the world, and ensures accurate disbursement of financial resources. She serves on a total of 70 boards and ensures accountability by auditing government agencies that use state funds as well as protecting unclaimed property. Controller Yee is also in charge of creating statewide financial reports, administering disbursements, and providing payroll services for California state employees. She is the chair of the Franchise Tax Board, serves on the CalPERS and CalSTRS boards,  continues to serve on the California Board of Equalization, and is also a board member of two of the country’s largest public pension funds.

Controller Yee is a member of the States Land Commission and works toward the protection and preservation of California’s environment. She also leads California’s economic development by incentivizing the creation of affordable housing. As a member of the Ceres Board of Directors, Controller Yee works towards promoting global sustainability and fighting climate change by working with investors. She co-founded the Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project to encourage high schoolers to learn about public service and the policy field.
