Detroit beats Anaheim on representation

Raphael Bostic penned an opinion piece for The Orange County Register on how Detroit is an example of good governance, perhaps particularly as the city’s Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing gets under way in federal court. After years of financial mismanagement, the city is making strides in other important fields like voting rights and democratic representation.

Let’s be honest, Orange County is not what first comes to mind when we think of voter discrimination. In fact, the provisions of the Voting Rights Act struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court last month did not even apply to Anaheim.

Although Detroit’s first election under the new rules will come under the receivership, meaning the new council members will have only limited power, this is a strong move in the right direction and a first step to a brighter future.
