It’s Been More Than 30 Years Since The House Reversed An Election Outcome

Fivethirtyeight.comfeatured research by Jeffery Jenkinsof the USC Price School and a colleague on contested results in 594 House seats from 1789 to 2012. The researchers wanted to examine the role contested elections played as the House matured.

Jenkins told FiveThirtyEight that he’s curious to see if contested elections become a renewed flash point in the country’s hyper-partisan environment. In their 2018 article, Jenkins and Stewart wrote that contested elections could once again emerge as a way for a political party to secure stronger governing majorities in an environment where neither party is dominant.
