Conversations about governance and policy implementation

The Bedrosian Center works to align the goals of academics and practitioners in order to foster effective governance. We strive to shape the public dialogue about governance and policy implementation in order to share good ideas, and work to make sure that government implements policy well. We believe that the knowledge of experts should be shared and that that knowledge can be used to shape and influence policy.

The purpose of this luncheon series is to provide students the opportunity to hear ideas from local, state, and national leaders as well as share their ideas and gain inspiration for effective governance in an enjoyable, informal setting.

Our inaugural Lunch with a Leader, hosted by Bedrosian Center Director Raphael Bostic, featured Austin Beutner.

Austin Beutner is the former First Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles. At age 29, he became the youngest partner at The Blackstone Group. At 33, he served in the US government under President Clinton where he led a team that helped Russia transition to a market economy after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He went on to found Evercore partners, as President and Co-DEO built the firm into a global leader.

Mr. Beutner serves as Chairman of the Board of CalArts, Chairman of the Board of the Broad Stage, and is Co-Chairman of the CalArts Community Arts Partnership. He is also Chairman of the Mommoth Mountain Community Foundation, which he founded. Additionally, he serves on the Boards of Directors of The Los Angeles Fund for Public Education, ACT Today!, and the California Nature Conservancy and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He also chairs the Board of Vision To Learn, a program he created which provides free glasses to low-income kids in Los Angeles schools.
